Pluses:
-Print quality and clarity have been excellent in both B/W and color.
-Only one paper jam in the document feeder; not one jam inside the printer in hundreds of print jobs
-Scanning client software works very well on Win7 and Win8 machines, as well as a Win7 virtual machine via VMWare Fusion on a Mac
-Duplexing has worked flawlessly for printing, copying and scanning; really a great paper and time saver
-The color display on the unit is easy to read and the menus are logically organized
-The paper tray is readily accessible and easy to load
-The print speed is very good for routine home use.
Quibbles
-In operation, the duplexing unit is loud enough to frighten family pets if they don't know what's coming- it sounds as if the paper is being shaken violently during its journey through the duplexor
-The one document feed jam was quite difficult to clear (even with the paper feed lid opened up)
For many years I had been purchasing successive HP inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs), but the quality of the control software and drivers just nose-dived over a period of 5-8 years. I kept buying a new model hoping that the software issues would be solved- some times I couldn't see the printer on the network even thought the IP address hadn't changed-mysterious and frustrating. Then I was really surprised when HP removed the ethernet port on some models, forcing you to rely on wireless. The software got a bit better, but still not reliable. Also, I didn't always use the printer frequently enough and would run into print cartridge dryout problems, and the print speed was excruciatingly slow for duplexed jobs because the ink had to dry on one side before the paper was passed through again.
I purchased this brother MFC because I had used a brother monochrome laser printer many years ago, and it was rock solid in operation, just like the old HP laser printers. I had given HP plenty of opportunities, so now it was time to try Brother. I have been very pleased with the switch to laser. For those of us old enough to remember when $5,000 couldn't buy you a color laser, to be able to purchase a quality unit at this price point is really satisfying.
This is admittedly an expensive MFP for home use, but for those of you who are just fed up with the limitations of inkjet units, you will quickly get spoiled by this printer. If you can use it for 5 years, you will have spent the same amount of money represented by two HP consumer-level inkjet MFPs at about 2.5 years each. There would seem to be no advantage to investing the same amount of money in a higher end inkjet MFP from any vendor unless you have a compelling need (eg photo printing) for ink technology. At this time, Brother seems to have a significant price advantage over feature-equivalent HP color laser MFPs.
The unit is heavy, but I like that- it stays where you put it and doesn't rock back and forth on a table. The unit is big, that's true, but the advantage is that the paper path is much less tight with less opportunity for a jam. The unit arrived at our house with no blemishes in excellent packaging.
If you can spare the money- go for it and don't look back...
This is my first personal MFC device I've owned, as well as my first color laser. In the workplace I have had experience with mostly Ricoh Aficio MFC's and in some ways this is better. I'll describe more as I go along
Pros
It's FAST. My last laser printer was 12ppm B&W. This product blows the socks off of that, including color. Warm up time is a little lengthy if you're antsy. Maybe 30 seconds to a minute? Don't quote me on that.
Double-sided scanning. Being used to Ricoh's which flip the page to scan both sides, I was surprised when I found out this device scanned both sides in a single pass! This cuts the scan time down by more than half compared to the office-grade MFC's I'm used to. It will scan 50 pages double-sided in less than 5 minutes! That's a guess, it may be faster.
When you install the software, it installs a fax device, so you can send a fax from your computer! You can also setup faxes to be received by your computer and not printed. Don't worry, if you're computer is not on, it will store the faxes until you turn your computer on. If you want the machine to answer faxes without manual intervention and you have voice mail or an answering machine, you need to have a dedicated line, or distinctive ring. This is true for all fax machines... no getting around it. If you're present at the machine and you know a fax is coming, you can make it manually answer the call.
I don't think it's quite as big as everyone says. Yes, it's tall, but it fits in less than a 2ft square footprint. However you want to consider that you need to have front and rear access. Rear access is used for envelope printing, or other stock that you don't want to bend.
I don't have much else to say as my biggest use for it is scanning. The printing is fine, but I've only printed a couple of dozen pages. I haven't tried pictures, but did try a magic eye illustration which came out looking good. If I want photo quality pictures, I send them to Target or Walmart.
Cons
I don't have any cons that I think are worthy of a star deduction, but maybe someone might want to know these:
You cannot setup a default scan profile on the device. I prefer to scan at 300dpi for documents, but if I try to scan using the touchscreen, it will default to 200 dpi, photo color all of the time, so you have to change it for every scan. The only way around this is to use the software on the computer. Therefore, if these defaults are important to you, it's best to have your computer right next to the printer. It works best if you open the software, load your papers to scan, then hit go on the computer. If you hit go on the MFC (and you select your computer), it will use whatever defaults are saved on your computer (1-sided v 2-sided, color v b&w, etc), so if you don't remember your last saved settings, you may be in for a surprise. I do not see this as an effective use in an office environment, though the software can be installed on more than one computer. I would not want to be more than 10 feet away from it if I was in an office environment.
Does not have 11x17 capability. Wish it did, but I knew that when I bought it. Largest paper size is Legal for scanning and printing.
File naming on scanning is annoying. I would prefer a date code, but it wants to name it something funny like CCF11202016.pdf. You can customize part of the name, but it's not real helpful Subsequent files on the same day have the same name with a "(x)" appended. I just wish we would all start to learn to date code by Year, Month, Day, and Time in that order. It makes sorting so much easier.
Update: I've owned this for nearly a year and have a couple of more negative points (still not worthy of star reduction).
1) Scanning through the document feeder is difficult to keep aligned straight. You think it's straight, but when you see the scan, a lot of the pages are crooked. You have to do your best in loading the paper straight, then just hope for the best or deal with the outcome.
2) When you use the software to scan, you have to select your page size. It will not auto-detect the page size. It also remembers your last setting, which could be good or bad, but annoying if you scan mostly 8.5x11, then one legal document, then back to 8.5x11 and you forget your last scan was legal, so you get a legal paper size scan.
Otherwise, it's still performing well.
Hope this helps someone!

I find the the touchscreen enjoyable to use and the menus are not terribly complicated. Wi-Fi direct is a bit of a PITA, but regular connectivity through Wi-Fi/LAN/USB is great. NFC & bluetooth would have been nice additions to keep up with the competition.
Absolutely no paper jams (ADF, Print) so far. Love the Duplex Scan/Print.
One of the best looking printers I have ever used as well.
Amazon Prime shipping was fast and easy. This specific model was sold at a steep discount because of minor cosmetic damage. I have yet to find any cosmetic damage.
El envio es excelente, llego 3 dias antes de lo estimado por el lugar donde vivo es muy retirado, pero para amazon, no hay problema. gracias.
CONTRA: Necesario tener un espacio suficiente para instalarla. Guía de instalación un poco deficiente.
