Extremely poor color print quality: severe dithering, poor printing of vector graphics.
1 Star
Extremely poor color print quality: severe dithering, poor printing of vector graphics.
We purchased this printer after having good experiences with a B&W laser from Brother, as we needed a printer to print scientific papers, which now usually rely on color figures, in color. To summarize: the print quality is so unacceptable for our purposes that the printer may as well not print color at all, and we are returning it. The scanner works decently, and the printer may be usable as a replacement for a cheap inkjet, but this is a mid-range small office printer, and is completely unable to print decent figures in comparison to far older color lasers. We will likely not purchase Brother color lasers again, and our confidence in Amazon reviews is greatly diminished. We primarily use Macs, and initially installed the printer with Apple's drivers. Outside of straight text, the prints showed significant dithering, to the point of making some parts of figures unrecognizable, and even text within figures was poor. There seems to be poor support for vector graphics outside of just standard text, with some very low-resolution rasterization going on, even for black: the printer might be set to print at 600 dpi, or "2400 dpi quality," but the rasterization seems to be taking place at well below 300 dpi, possibly even below 150 dpi. This is completely unacceptable, but seemed like it might be a driver problem. Without the "fine" setting checked, by the way, this also extended to color text outside of figures. At this point, we repeated the calibration and registration routines within the printer. This did nothing to improve output, as they were likely run automatically during initial setup. We then installed the Brother drivers, and tried a variety of settings. This included outright rasterizing outside of the printer, in InDesign, at 300 dpi; this still had the same problems. Various settings for he improve gray and improve black options made some changes, but did not substantively increase quality. Dithering was still a significant problem, and figures entirely lacked sharpness. Printing was tried from InDesign CC (with and without bitmap output), Illustrator CC, Skim, and Preview.Thinking that this might be a problem with Brother's Apple drivers, we then installed a clean copy of Windows 10 in a virtual machine, and installed Brother's Windows drivers. With some settings, this indeed improved dithering, suggesting that Brother's macOS drivers are significantly inferior. However, most settings continued to show significant dithering, and even with improved dithering, figures still lacked sharpness. Printing was done from Microsoft Edge and Sumatra PDF, using a number of different print settings, including combinations of improve gray/improve black/improve thin lines/etc. Note that several of these options are not available with the macOS driver at all.We primarily compared these results with an old HP Color Laserjet 4700 we have access to at another lab. With default settings, the printing from this printer is far, far better. Text in figures is comparable with straight text. Vector graphics are sharp. Dithering is present, as with all color lasers, but is far less noticeable. This from a printer that was released in *2005*, has a listed lower max resolution, and is currently reported to be having calibration difficulties (as can be seen slightly in our print sample). We have attached a series of images showing print quality. We used as a test print a portion of a figure from one of our papers, for which we had a high quality, vector PDF source. For conciseness, we've included four images showing typical outputs seen from a variety of different settings. One, which should be immediately clear, is from the Laserjet 4700, as a reference; note that was from a print of the entire paper and thus the reverse is slightly visible. The others are from various settings on the Brother. All were printed at the same size, on the same paper, from the same computer, and all were scanned on the Brother as PNGs at 1200 dpi through the ADF, on single-side mode, with corrections off. The images were converted to JPEGs for uploading here.
